When to bring in a behaviorist (and how to find a good one)
3 min read
Most walk problems improve with patient, reward-based practice. Some situations need a professional at your side.
Get help if
- Your dog has bitten a person or another dog, or tried to.
- Reactivity appeared suddenly, or your dog seems in pain. See a vet first.
- Your dog is aggressive toward people in your household.
- You feel unsafe walking your dog.
Who to look for
- Certified behavior consultants: IAABC (CDBC, CBCC-KA).
- Certified trainers: CCPDT (CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP).
- Veterinary behaviorists (DACVB), especially if medication might help.
- Anyone who promises fast fixes with prong, choke or shock collars is a red flag.
